a heart for two homes….

It felt like deja vu… There were 6 missed phone calls from my mom a few weeks ago and I instantly had that ice cold feeling in the pit of your stomach.. oh no I though what has happened… it’s the phone call we all dread. There was an accident and I need to get home as soon as possible. That’s the one thing that makes living away from family difficult, when there is an emergency you have to figure out a flight to get there ASAP… and late Thursday night before a long weekend is not the easiest to fly home. My sister was here visiting and we knew one of us had to get on a plane the very next day and the other one as soon as possible. She left Friday I managed to get out Saturday.

I was home for just over two weeks. The accident turned out to not be as bad, and in a few days the whole family was home and the road to recovery was being made in leaps and bounds. I came home last Friday, its always a little difficult for me to come from the home I grew up in, Seattle, to the place I now call home, SoCal. It always takes me a few days to readjust, decompress and settle back in the routine of life here. I go from missing my home here while I am in Seattle to again missing Seattle while I am here! But as I settle back into the rhythm of life it’s the small things that comfort me. Morning coffee with Kyle, watering my flowers, walks with Chloe on the beach, all the things that seem so insignificant but make up my life everyday. As I look at my mile long to-do list I manage to smile because at least if I need a break me and Chloe can go on the patio and water some flowers… we’re home after all and it feels so good!

One thing I miss the most… Chloe in the morning, waiting around wondering what we are going to do that day!

Here’s the thing about Kyle and I, we don’t take ourselves to seriously we laugh a lot and always have fun together! At last weekends wedding when Y.M.C.A came on suddenly there were firefighter hats, sailor hats, police hats and my FAVORITE the indian headdress thrown onto the dance floor. As we were shooting the reception we couldn’t help but snap some pics with of each other in some fun hats! Thats why I love that we get to do this together, we are two peas in a pod and I love every moment of it.

And yes I am aware in these photos we look ridiculous but hey if you cant laugh at yourself what’s the point!

So this weekend on a whim Kyle and I decided to drive up to LA and visit the LACMA museum. We have shot engagement sessions there before and have always said “we should really come up and actually see this place,” so on Sunday we did just that. It was a great day trip and we would highly recommend it. They have a great little lunch spot and tons of amazing art work to check out.

As we strolled threw and looked at everything from Picasso to Warhol it amazed me at how different all these works of art are! How some art, the more you look a them the more you see, that at first you missed by just glancing. It hit me that I want to stretch myself and try new things, shoot things that my not seem “normal” so that I entice people to look longer and maybe make them see something more. With wedding season going into full swing and a lot of shoots its easy to fall back on the norm, and while that is the basis of what we do this time of year I want to try more and to not be afraid to create my own kind of art.

So it’s 11:54 and my to-do list has only 1 line crossed off, and I wrote this list at 9:30 IN THE AM. How its 11:54 and I am not farther along, I don’t really know. I’m having a bit of brain block today! In the past few weeks I have tried to crave out some time to allow myself to just go out and think, be creative, no specific shoot in mind or purpose, just to see what is lurking in my creativity that my to-do list often over shadows. Sometimes its merely sitting on my patio brainstorming about nothing in particular, its taking a walk when its almost noon and my productivity is flatlined. Today it was going outside sitting on my patio with Chloe and looking at newly planted flowers and getting away from my computer for a minute. Sometimes I swear my computer feels like my pseudo boss/time-card/creativity-drainer. So I encourage you whether its the day, an hour or even 15 minutes, allow yourself some space to be creative, I think you’ll be amazed as to what’s waiting!

And as you can see Chloe was non to pleased to be awoken from her sunbathing nap while I snapped a few photos of her…

That’s why I love to read because page by page a story unfolds as you read it, when its really good I have to refrain from jumping ahead to find out what happens. I can picture the story in my mind and instantly get lost for an entire afternoon in a good book. When I was little I was not the best at reading, pair that with the fact my parents didn’t have cable TV, reading became not only something I had to do to get better at but sometimes my only outlet of entertainment. So needless to say as I’ve grown up my love of reading has not gone anywhere, add an iPad where I can instantly by books and “Houston we have a problem.”

At the start of the year I made the conscious effort to turn off the TV when nothing really great is on. I mean really one can only watch so many reruns of House Hunters on a Wednesday night. I also decided to dive into some of the business book people swear by. So here is my little review on some of my recent reads.

The E-Myth by Michael E Gerber, I have heard of this book FOREVER. So one Saturday I decided to buy it (thanks to the instant iPad) and it did not disappoint. Many people say this is a must read and I 100% agree, anyone with their own business will benefit from it. It clarifies so much and I had so many “that’s so true” moments that I will probably go back a re-read all my highlighted points.

Then Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos. The character I liked most in this book was Clare, an 11yr old going threw a major trauma as her world falls apart while her mother deals with mental illness. You feel protective of this girl from the start, and her journey is what carries the book. Its a double narrative told from 2 points of view and while Cornelia was not my favorite heroine Clare’s character makes this a good read.

Zag, by Marty Neumeier. Great book, simple well organized points and doesn’t over pontificate to sound smart. A pared down book about differentiation in your business. I have read this book a few times and often pick it up for a quick read. The points it makes are so simple its refreshing and has inspired some new ideas I’m pretty stoked about.

Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan. I got this book from Jasmine Stars blog, she has some great recommendations and I have been introduced to some good reads by her reviews. This book is told threw the point of view of Frank Lloyd Wrights mistress Mamah Borthwick Cheney. Interesting read because Mamah has some feminist ideals that don’t really fit into that time, combine that with a forbidden affair, a famous architect, and it makes for a great read.

Never Eat Alone, by Keith Ferrazzi. A good read, in todays world where FB and Twitter and so many of our interactions are surface I liked the idea of this book and its take on meaningful relationships. Sincerity and connecting on a real level really drove this book home for me, its not so much about passing out business cards and racking up Facebook friends but investing in people and their lives. I liked it reminded me to be open and honest and engage with people more!

So wish me luck I’m onto Jay Z’s Decoded, Love Is The Killer App, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn and Valley of the Dolls.
